I do them quite quickly and with them print size on the screen. I can't tell you how long because I lose track of time. Then I spend anything up to a week producing the "art work" with the image blown up 200% at 600 dpi - so a single eye, for instance, can be 4" across. Sometimes I think I should turn in the roughs as finished art. Occasionally, when I want a looser sketchier look to part of a cover I'll use part of the rough. The sky on the final issue of The Last Days of Animal Man for instance.
For many artists that would be the finished art and there'd nothing wrong with that. Are you ever tempted to create a strip in this way? One of your personal strips is a bit more like this in style.
You know Brian some artist would conceder that you done to be finished artwork. Do you some times get lost in the detail of a work at 200% that is every details. It also the curse of Photoshop that one can get that up and close to a art piece. I have see you work over the years from Judge Dredd and you have go more realistic and more detailed in you work. It really must take you longer to produce but the art piece is worth it in the end.
That is a great looking Dredd on the cover of The Complete Brian Bolland. I always preferred the more athletic look to Dredd rather the the muscle bound look.

THAT is rough. The colours look as if they took all of five minutes to apply.
